Linda Wong Invited to Participate in the 16th Session of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Saudi Arabia
On November 6, 2024, Prof. Linda Wong, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), received an official invitation from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in China. In this message of goodwill, the Embassy extended a formal invitation from the Director of Saudi Arabia's National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification, inviting Ms. Wong to attend the Green Zone activities at the 16th Session of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16), set to take place in Riyadh from December 2 to 13, 2024.
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) plays a crucial role in global environmental governance by providing a framework for international cooperation to address the challenges of desertification, land degradation, and drought, and to promote sustainable land management.
The UNCCD COP16 is a distinctive multilateral forum where governments, businesses, and civil society converge to tackle critical challenges facing sustainable development today, particularly in reversing land degradation and enhancing resilience to drought. The 16th COP is anticipated to be the largest gathering of the UNCCD’s 197 Parties to date and marks the first time the COP is being held in the Middle East, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Convention’ s inception. As an observer to the UNCCD, the CBCGDF has already organized a delegation of 8 people and will fly to Riyadh to attend COP16 in person.
For years, CBCGDF has been a committed advocate of biodiversity conservation and green development, conducting a number of initiatives aimed at combating desertification and promoting sustainable land use.
Furthermore, previously, Linda Wong contributed to the development of the UNCCD’s Youth Participation Strategy and Action Plan. In 2023, she advised the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) “Nature as Infrastructure” initiative, and helped the field research across China’s Three-North region.
