ZHOU Jinfeng Talks About Science Diplomacy in the “Story” of International Scientific Cooperation

Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), Fellow of World Academy of Art and Science attended the “Science Diplomacy to support Human Security & Sustainable Development” Session at the WAAS@64 Conference and delivered a speech.  



Dr. Zhou Jinfeng shared several stories on promoting scientific diplomacy and sustainable development in international scientific cooperation. 

I. In 2016, the Big Science Research Plans for Beijing Swifts was jointly carried out by the CBCGDF
 Bird Watching Working Committee, researchers from Beijing Normal University, Sun Yat-sen University, Lund University in Sweden, the UK’s “Swift Action” team, and Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

II. In 2016, CBCGDF established the “Wetland Conservation Area · Tiaozini in Dongtai” to support the conservation of coastal wetlands. Together with other conservation organizations, institutions and experts, CBCGDF have successfully pushed Jiangsu Dongtai Tiaozini Wetland into the Phase I after several years of unremitting efforts and promotion. On July 5, 2019, China’s Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf (Phase I) was inscribed on the World Heritage List as a natural site.

III. The “Construction of the Yellow-Bohai Sea Spotted Seals Protected Area Network” Project was carried out by the CBCGDF in 2019, under the support and guidance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), GEF Small Grants Programme, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystems Phase II Project Office.

IV. On January 29, 2022, the NESS Working Committee of CBCGDF and ReWild officially signed a memorandum of understanding and jointly started supporting work in multiple conservation areas in Madagascar.

V. On March 9, 2023, the Clean Internet for Conophytum, a nature conservation initiative, was launched by the Botanical Garden Working Committee of CBCGDF, aiming to combat illegal wildlife trade, especially transnational poaching and illegal succulent plant trade, by cleaning up illegal wild plant trade on online trading platforms.

VI. Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and CBCGDF signed strategic cooperation agreement in addressing climate change and green development in June 2024.

VII. Proposing to international organizations such as IUCN, CBD, and RAMSAR, and participating in the formulation of the regional instrument “Action Plan for the Great Bustard in Asia” under the CMS Convention; actively participating in international standardization work such as ISO.
