The Ecology of Xicai River Has Improved After the Water Was Released to Flush out the Sewage, but the Root Cause Still Needs to Be Overcome｜Promoted by CBCGDF Research Department

On June 26, 2024, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Media published an article reported by CBCGDF volunteers in Henan Province about the serious pollution of the Xicai River this summer. The next day, the Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau of Shenqiu County, Zhoukou City, Henan Province, where the pollution of the Xicai River occurred, immediately initiated treatment, released water to flush the contaminated section of the river, and organized personnel to salvage the dirty scabs and blue algae from the original contaminated water surface.

The rapid response and actions of the Shenqiu County Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau are worthy of recognition. CBCGDF is also very grateful to the relevant government departments for their efforts in treating local black and smelly water bodies.

Local CBCGDF volunteers reported that after learning that the Xicai River became dirty again after summer this year.On the one hand, the Housing and Construction Bureau of Shenqiu County coordinated the opening of the Shabei Main Canal located at the northwest corner of Shenqiu County, and introduced the water from the upstream Shaying River through the control gate near the highway bridge to flush the black and smelly water in the urban section of Xicai River; at the same time, sanitation workers were organized to manually salvage the dirty materials, dead fish, and airtight blue algae accumulated on the surface of Xicai River. After two consecutive days of flushing, diluting and salvaging with river water, the dirty condition of Xicai River has improved significantly.

Pollution control must address the root cause. At present, the local housing and construction department has urgently treated the serious pollution of Xicai River, but it is far from a fundamental treatment. CBCGDF hopes that the housing and construction department, environmental protection department, water conservancy department, etc. can take the overall perspective of the water ecological security of the Huaihe River and the lower reaches of the Huaihe River, perform their respective duties, speed up the construction of the local sewage discharge network in Shenqiu County, strengthen the strict management of sewage discharge in the upper reaches and surrounding areas of Xicai River, put an end to direct sewage discharge, and wipe the dirt off the river as soon as possible for this historic river.
