What is Biodiversity Footprint?

Biodiversity Footprint is an indicator that measures the impact and dependence of individuals, institutions, products, or projects on biodiversity. It can be used not only to assess the degree of damage to biodiversity (including ecosystem, gene and species diversity) caused by certain products, projects or human activities, but also to measure the contribution of ecosystem functions, balance of nature and biodiversity conservation. This concept was proposed by Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) on May 4, 2018.

The calculation of biodiversity footprints usually involves evaluating different biological communities, species, and habitats to understand their contributions to biodiversity. Many factors should be considered, including land use, resource consumption, biological invasion, ecosystem damage, and wildlife protection. The purpose of biodiversity footprint is to provide a quantitative method to help people realize the impact of their activities on biodiversity and promote sustainable ecosystem management and protection.

The concept of biodiversity footprint emphasizes the interdependence and mutual influence between humans and nature. It recognizes that human activities not only pose a threat to biodiversity, but also rely on the maintenance and restoration of biodiversity. By evaluating the biodiversity footprint, we can better understand the pressure of human activities on ecosystems, and thus develop strategies for protecting and sustainably utilizing biodiversity.

The methods to reduce biodiversity footprint include protecting and restoring ecosystems, reducing overuse of natural resources, controlling species invasion, promoting sustainable land use and resource management, and promoting environmental education and awareness raising. At the same time, governments, businesses, and individuals all need to cooperate and take comprehensive measures to promote sustainable development, conserve the biodiversity on Earth.

The concept and application of biodiversity footprint will help people to understand the importance of biodiversity, encourage sustainable ecosystem management and conservation measures, and provide support for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. By reducing the footprint of biodiversity, we can ensure the health and functionality of natural ecosystems, maintain the rich biodiversity on the Earth, and achieve harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
