Ma Yong: Empowering Pakistan Youth to Help Address Climate Change

Hosted by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and supported by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Youth Charity Art Exhibition with the theme of “Empowering with Love, Drawing Hope Together” was held at World Design Capital in Beijing on July 1-2, 2023.

This exhibition brought together works created by hundreds of children and teenagers aged 4-14 from 75 schools and institutions in 25 cities across the country. In the three exhibition areas, including children’s painting, digital production and refugees’ handicraft, over 600 works reflected the environmental awareness advocated by UNHCR to pay attention to green energy among children and young people. There was also be a runway show about their creative ideas on environmental protection performed by 50 teenagers, with the title of “Walking Home”.

Ma Yong, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF delivered a speech. The statement is summarized as follow:

Dear guests,

Thank you for coming to the Youth Charity Art exhibition. First of all, high temperature warnings have been issued in recent days in Beijing, where the exhibition ‍‍is held. The warnings alert us to face the issue of global climate change. Through divergent thinking, young people present the current global climate change problem through the brush, and provide solutions, which is a new attempt of cross-border integration. ‍ ‍ ‍

Global climate change has caused the climate crisis, biodiversity crisis and public health crisis. They bring great threats and challenges to the sustainable development of the earth. ‍‍Therefore, we hope that the event will led the whole society to pay attention to the increasingly severe environmental problems we are facing, ‍‍and then consider changing some of our bad living habits in the past, ‍‍strive to achieve a production and life style based on “ecological”, “green” and “low-carbon”. This is the first hope and goal that we seek to achieve through this event.

‍‍Second, we hope to appeal to and motivate more people to take practical actions to promote changes in ‍‍related to climate change. CBCGDF and the UNHCR launched the charity fundraising project “Empowering Pakistan with Love”. It is to assist refugees in Pakistan by providing clean energy, scientific and environmental protection to help them improve their lives.

Finally, I hope our next generation can pay attention to these crisis caused by ourselves as soon as possible,‍‍ make contributions to ‍‍the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. ‍
