Towards Sustainable Ocean and Wetland Ecological Governance: Jinfeng Zhou, Shufeng Ye, and Xuechu Chen Hold Seminar in Shanghai

In the afternoon of July 24, 2023, Dr. Jinfeng Zhou, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), Professor Shufeng Ye from the East China Sea Development Institute of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and Professor Xuechu Chen from the School of Ecological and Environmental Sciences at East China Normal University, held a fruitful seminar in Shanghai.

The main focus of this meeting was to explore China's international research frontiers in global ocean governance, connectivity protection, and marine ecosystem ecology. The experts engaged in discussions and exchanges on these crucial topics, as well as shared insights on the management and planning research of marine ecosystems.

The CBCGDF is a national first-level society dedicated to biodiversity conservation and green development and an accredited organization by the United Nations Ocean Conference. Both Professor Shufeng Ye and Professor Xuechu Chen are well-respected experts with extensive experience in marine ecological protection and wetland restoration.

During the seminar, the three experts emphasized the significance of China's deep involvement in global ocean governance during UN SDGs era. With the increasing severity of global climate change and environmental issues, the protection of marine resources and the governance of marine environments have become urgent tasks worldwide. As a country with vast maritime territory and abundant marine resources, China bears significant responsibilities and active participation in global ocean governance cooperation is crucial. The experts unanimously agreed that through promoting international cooperation and exchanges, the challenges faced by the oceans can be jointly addressed, and the sustainable utilization of global marine resources can be promoted.

Furthermore, the importance of connectivity protection in marine ecosystems was also discussed. The health of marine ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity require the establishment of transboundary cooperation mechanisms to collectively protect marine habitats. Dr. Jinfeng Zhou shared some of his efforts as the Executive of the Marine Connectivity Working Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), expressing his commitment to contributing to marine protection areas and other related fields in the future.

Lastly, the experts delved into research on the management and planning of marine ecosystems. As China continues to advance ecological civilization and green development, the rational utilization and ecological protection of marine resources become particularly crucial. During the seminar, they shared experiences and achievements in marine ecosystem management and planning, and engaged in fruitful exchanges on how to better protect marine ecosystems. They all look forward to leveraging their respective strengths, collaborating hand in hand, and promoting the proposal of a Chinese solution for marine ecosystem conservation and sustainable utilization, making greater contributions to global ecological civilization construction.
