Freya Mathews: A Famous Contemporary Environmental Philosopher

Freya Mathews is an Emeritus Professor of Environmental Philosophy at Latrobe University, Australia. Her major books include The Ecological Self (1991), For Love of Matter: a Contemporary Panpsychism (2003), Reinhabiting Reality: Towards a Recovery of Culture (2005), and most recently, The Dao of Civilization: a Letter to China, which was released in 2023. Her first book, The Ecological Self, was re-issued in 2021 in the Routledge Classics Series. A new book, Conservation in Dialogue with Indigenous Law, is due to be published by Routledge in 2024.  




Professor Mathews is also the author of over a hundred articles and essays on ecological philosophy. This work traverses a wide range of topics, including foundations for an ecological civilization; indigenous (Australian and Chinese) perspectives on the environment and how these perspectives might be adapted to the context of a 21st-century world in crisis; panpsychism and critique of the metaphysics of modernity; ecology and religion; and conservation ethics in the context of the Anthropocene.

 

In addition to her research activities, Professor Mathews co-manages a 350-acre semi-arid conservation reserve in her home state of Victoria. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
