A New Intergovernmental Technical WG on Microorganism and Invertebrate Genetic Resources was Set up at the 19th Regular Session of CGRFA | CBCGDF Delegation Reports

The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) had its 19th regular session from July 17 to 21 in Rome. China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) was invited to participate the session as an observer.

The establishment of a new intergovernmental technical working group on microorganism and invertebrate genetic resources (MIGR) was among the many important achievements of the session.

Microorganisms play a vital role in soil bioremediation and nutrient cycling. They can help maintain the ecological balance of the soil, promote plant growth, and keep farmland healthy and fertile. In addition, microorganisms can also degrade harmful substances and improve the yield and quality of crops, thereby providing farmers with a more stable and sustainable source of income.

Pollinators, in turn, play an integral role in the natural pest control and pollination of crops. They help maintain ecological balance and protect crops from pests, while also promoting plant reproduction and growth. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies and insects can help crops achieve efficient pollination, thereby increasing crop yield and quality.

By establishing a dedicated technical working group, the CGRFA hopes to draw greater attention to the importance of microbes and pollinators, and to promote related research and policy development which will help improve the sustainability of agricultural production, increase food production and quality, and create better economic conditions for farmers. At the same time, microorganisms and pollinators may provide new solutions to challenges such as global climate change and environmental degradation, thereby making positive contributions to achieving food safety and sustainable development goals.
