Day 2 : Investigating the Sea-buckthorn Planting Area in Ejin Horo Banner, Ordos | CBCGDF 2023 Arid Area Biodiversity Investigation
July 24, 2023, the second day of the investigation. Experts from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) went to Daolaodai Village, Nalintaohai Town, Ejin Horo Banner, Ordos City to inspect the sea-buckthorn planting area. From 1998 to 2014, Ejin Horo Banner carried out a project to plant 100,000 sea-buckthorn trees.
Subsequently, the research experts from CBCGDF inspected the local 2,100-acre sea-buckthorn planting area located in tailings area and the urban ecological water and soil conservation project (approximately 9.3 hectares of sea-buckthorns were planted in the arsenic sandstone area on the exposed hillside).
Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is an authentic Chinese native plant. 90% of global sea-buckthorn resources are distributed in most parts of Northern China. It has strong adaptability to barren mountains and hills. It is easy to form dominant vegetation on sunny slopes where forests are not easy to extend, and can improve the ecological environment of barren mountains and slopes. Its root system is very developed, which can prevent wind and sand fixation and prevent soil erosion.
