19th Regular Session of CGRFA Reviews the Work on Biodiversity, Nutrition and Human Health | CBCGDF Delegation Reports from Rome
The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) is having its 19th regular session from July 17 to 21 in Rome. China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) was invited to participate the session as an observer.
At its 17th Regular Session, the CGRFA decided to schedule, within its Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPOW), a review of work on biodiversity and nutrition and health as part of the agenda for its 19th Regular Session.
In the field of Nutrition, FAO aims to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development via transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems. “Healthy diets” is one of the priority areas. A dedicated cross-organizational Vision and Strategy of FAO’s Work in Nutrition has been established to support the work of the Committee on World Food Security on voluntary guidelines and to conduct research to assess principles, metrics and data for healthy diets. In addition, FAO will focus on indigenous food systems, the follow-up to the UN Nutrition Decade, and empirical work related to topics such as the microbiome.
The One Health approach is more prominent in the human–animal health realm than in the human–plant health realm, despite the human-health impacts of plant pests and diseases beyond their impacts on crop yields (e.g. the effects of mycotoxins) and their linkages with climate change. FAO collaborated with the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention on plant health. As with nutrition, FAO’s work on One Health is more focused on biodiversity in general than on BFA or GRFA specifically.
The Commission invites Members to integrate GRFA into their food security and nutrition policies, including public research and extension programmes, public procurement and education policies, and market and value chain development, with the aim of arriving at policies that support food security, adequate nutrition, resilience to climate change and the conservation and sustainable use of GRFA.
Also, the Commission recommends that FAO continue collaborating with its partners on healthy diets and nutrition, their metrics and indicators, and on plant, animal and human health, and raising awareness of the importance of genetic diversity and BFA.
