July 24th, 2023 is ninth Species of the Day of Ili Pika, and some people call it "Save Ili Pika Day". This year marks the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the Ili pika. The Ili pika is a unique species in Xinjiang, China. In 2016, CBCGDF established the Yili Pika CCAfa. Today, the Ili pika has become one of the National Second-class Protected Animals. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the Ili pika, not long ago, Mr. Li Weidong gave a lecture tour in Shanghai.
The Ili Pika, (Ochotona iliensis), is listed as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This small lagomorph has a highly fragmented distribution within a restricted geographical range in the Tian Shan Mountains in Xinjiang. Over the past ten years, the Ili Pika has suffered a dramatic decline, both in terms of its population size and the extent of its range. The exact cause of this decline is not known, but it is speculated that climate change and an increase in grazing pressure are having a negative impact on the species. Furthermore, low population densities and reproductive rates, coupled with a relatively limited ability to disperse, are impeding the ability of the species to recover.
