The Conversation of Dao of Civilization Will Be Held by Deep Transformation Network

Transitioning our world to an ecological civilization would require a new ethical foundation for society. In place of one based on extraction, exploitation, and wealth accumulation, we could envisage a civilization based on life-affirming principles. For the dominant Western way of thinking, this requires a profound ontological shift. However, other cultures, such as traditional Chinese culture, have held worldviews more aligned with the values of an ecological civilization.

 

In this Deep Transformation Network Live Interactive Conversation, Jeremy will discuss with Freya and Jinfeng the potentially fertile overlap between the principles of ecological civilization and traditional Chinese values. What are these core values, and how do they relate to the ethical underpinnings for the deep transformation our world needs today? What changes would be required in China’s current set of policies for it to lead the world toward a just and regenerative future? And how can each of us reorient our own lives to co-create a future civilization that encompasses the wisdom of the Dao?

About the Speakers

 

Freya Mathews is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Philosophy at Latrobe University. Her books include The Ecological Self (1991, 2021), Ecology and Democracy (editor) (1996), For Love of Matter: a Contemporary Panpsychism (2003), Journey to the Source of the Merri (2003), Reinhabiting Reality: towards a Recovery of Culture (2005), Ardea: a philosophical novella (2016), Without Animals Life is not Worth Living (2016) and The Dao of Civilization: a Letter to China (2023). She is the author of over a hundred essays, chapters and articles in the area of ecological philosophy. Her current special interests are: ecological civilization; indigenous (Australian and Chinese) perspectives on “regenerativity” and how these perspectives may be adapted to the context of contemporary global society; panpsychism and the critique of the metaphysics of modernity; and conservation ethics. In addition to her research activities, she helps to care for a private conservation reserve in northern Victoria. She is a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

 

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng is Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), a China-based NGO participating at the leading edge of biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development. Born in 1962, Dr. Zhou has earned a global reputation as a seasoned supporter of sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, and poverty alleviation. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng graduated from Peking University and earned a PhD in Chemistry from Perdue University. Dr. Zhou was the proponent and one of the creators of China’s famous Guangcai (Glory) program which integrated the expertise, and efforts of the government, NGOs and private enterprises in creating sustainable businesses in the poorest areas of China.

 

Jeremy Lent is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization’s existential crisis, and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. His award-winning books, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning, and The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe, trace the historical underpinnings and flaws of the dominant worldview, and offer a foundation for an integrative worldview that could lead humanity to a flourishing future. He has written extensively about the vision of, and pathways toward, an ecological civilization and is founder of the Deep Transformation Network.
