2023 International Climate Conference of People Forum Will Focus on Environmental Services [ICCOP 2023]

2023 International Climate Conference of People Forum (ICCOP 2023), which is going to be held by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) on September 3rd, 2023, during 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS). This conference aims to empower individuals and communities to actively participate in mitigating climate change and creating a sustainable future for all.

The theme of this forum is “Environmental Services and Carbon Neutrality Goals”. Environmental services are defined as the benefits provided by ecosystems that contribute to human well-being, including various ecological functions like clean air and water, climate regulation, and biodiversity conservation. These services are directly linked to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

First of all, environmental services contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Forests, for example, act as carbon sinks by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. By protecting and restoring forests, we can enhance their capacity to sequester carbon and thus help mitigate climate change. Likewise, ecosystems like wetlands and grasslands also play a significant role in carbon capture and storage.

What’s more, environmental services facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy. For instance, renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower provide clean and sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, sustainable agriculture and land management practices, including organic and green farming, not only enhance biodiversity but also reduce emissions from agricultural activities.

Environmental services also contribute to climate resilience and adaptation. Ecosystems such as coastal mangroves and coral reefs offer natural defenses against storms and coastal erosion. By protecting and restoring these ecosystems, we can enhance our resilience to climate-related hazards and reduce the need for costly artificial infrastructure.

In summary, environmental services are closely linked to the achievement of the dual carbon goals. To effectively address climate change, it is essential for people to recognize and value these services, conserve and restore ecosystems, and integrate nature-based solutions (NbS) into climate action strategies.
