2023 World Tiger Day：Preliminary Report on Tiger Status in China Issued by CBCGDF

July 29, 2023 is the annual World Tiger Day.

On July 29th, 2022, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) released The Preliminary Report on Tiger Status in China. The report shows that there are about 7,116 tigers in the Chinese territory, including four subspecies of tigers: Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris ssp.altaica), Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) and Indochinese tigers (Panthera tigris ssp. corbetti).

Among these, 2,715 are in zoos, 3,744 are in specialized breeding facilities such as the Northeast Tiger Forest Park, Changchun Northeast Tiger Park and Bear Tiger Lodge, and 584 are in 34 circuses with artificial tiger breeding licenses in Suizhou, Anhui Province, which is known as a “Hometown to Circus”. There are also about 55 wild Siberian tigers distributed in Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, and 14-20 Indochinese tigers distributed in the wild in southwest Yunnan Province.

Tigers play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem health, and its significance cannot be underestimated. As top carnivores, tigers are key links in the food chain, regulating prey populations and helping to maintain ecological balance. They primarily feed on herbivores, such as deer and wild boar, helping to reduce the spread of disease and keep prey populations healthy by preying on weak or diseased individuals.

Tigers also has an important impact on the structure and stability of forests and grasslands. They can control the range of prey, avoid overgrazing and over-predation on vegetation, and maintain the integrity of plant communities. At the same time, tigers also help maintain species diversity in vegetation because they limit the outbreak of certain prey populations, giving other plants and animals a chance to thrive in the area.

In addition, tigers have largely shaped the behavior and habits of other animals. Prey often change their activity patterns and feeding habits for fear of being predation, and this behavioral adaptation is crucial to maintaining ecological balance and species diversity.

The Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park is an important protected area designated for the protection of tigers and leopards in China, and it is one of the flagship projects of global biodiversity conservation. Covering 14,100 square kilometers in northeast China, the reserve was once home to a wide range of Siberian tigers and leopards, but their populations have declined dramatically in the wild for a variety of reasons over the past century.

In recent years, China has attached great importance to the protection of Siberian tigers and leopards, and has taken a series of measures to rebuild their habitats. In the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, forest vegetation has been restored, production and living activities in the core area have been withdrawn, and projects such as tiger and leopard migration and diffusion corridors have been built to ensure that the living environment of these rare species has been improved. Siberian tigers and leopards have more ecologically connected habitats.
