WANG Zhiling Delivered an Opening Speech at the 3rd Symposium on Conservation and Benefit Sharing of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Wild plant genetic resources for food and agriculture serve as the foundation for human survival, and their protection and sustainable use are crucial. In order to conserve and ensure the sustainable use of all plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and to fairly and equitably share the benefits arising from their use, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences jointly organized ‘The Third Symposium on Conservation and Benefit Sharing of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture’ on May 23, 2023 in the International Exchange Center of Vegetable Research Institute of Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences.

Prof. Wang Zhiling, Vice President of Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, delivered an opening speech. The content is briefly shared as follows:

Dear Dr. Kent Nnadozie, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Good morning! First of all, please allow me to extend a warm welcome to everyone on behalf of the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences.

Founded in 1958, the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences has 15 research institutes (centers), forming five major areas: agricultural biological genetics and breeding; agricultural green development; agricultural product storage, processing, and nutrition and health; smart agriculture and digital villages; agricultural development and rural revitalization. The three disciplines of "Plant and Animal Science", "Agricultural Science" and "Environment and Ecology" have entered the top 1% of ESI rankings.

In the past ten years, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences has undertaken more than 1,000 national scientific research projects; approved and identified more than 550 new varieties; obtained over 30 new plant variety authorizations; promoted more than 2,000 new varieties, new technologies and new products. Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences has cooperated with more than 30 countries in more than 100 scientific and technological projects, and signed cooperation agreements with universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries. We have 2 national-level international scientific and technological cooperation bases, 8 municipal-level international scientific and technological cooperation bases, and 11 international joint laboratories on scientific and technological cooperation.

Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences attaches great importance to the collection, preservation, scientific research, innovation and utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, which are important part of biodiversity and an important strategic resource for ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural development. We hope to have fruitful discussions through this meeting and everyone can put forward constructive suggestions on the protection and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and contribute wisdom to promote the diversity and protection of food and agricultural plants in our country.

I wish the meeting a complete success.

Thanks.
