CBCGDF Deputy Secretary-General Addresess "Earth for All" Book Launch at 29th Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF)

 The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), in collaboration with China Translation & Publishing House (CTPH) and the Club of Rome (CoR), successfully held the book launch and sharing event for "Earth for All" at the National Convention Center in Beijing (E2.A01, China Publishing Group Exhibition Area, No. 7 Tianchen East Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing) on June 18, 2023. This event was part of the 29th Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) 2023. The event was livestreamed by CBCGDF Media, and a total of 836 participants joined the event online.

Ms. XIONG Yutong, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, attended the book launch and sharing event of "Earth for All" and delivered a wonderful speech. The contents of her speech are summarized as follows:

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends, good morning!

Today, at this grand Beijing International Book Fair, the book "Earth for All" translated by the world-renowned think tank, the Club of Rome, and published by Zhongyi Publishing House, has finally met the readers.

From "The Limits to Growth" in 1972 to this book, "Earth for All," the Club of Rome has consistently focused on economic growth models, ecological environmental issues, existential crises, and foresight for the future, always striving to explore and alert the future development of human society.

Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary-General of CBCGDF, as an executive commitee member of the Club of Rome, reached a cooperation agreement in early April 2022 with the authors of the Club of Rome to translate and publish the Chinese version of "Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity" in China. Over the past year, the translators and publishing team of CBCGDF's International Department have worked tirelessly to finally present this masterpiece to the readers in China. Here, on behalf of CBCGDF and Dr. ZHOU, I would like to express our gratitude to the lead authors: Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Owen Gaffney, Jayati Ghosh, Jørgen Randers, Johan Rockström, and Per Espen Stoknes. I would also like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to the translation and publication of this book.

In 1972, the bestselling book "The Limits to Growth" by the Club of Rome caused a huge sensation worldwide. One of the striking warnings in the book was that if humanity relentlessly pursued economic growth without considering environmental costs, global society would undergo rapid decline, and even collapse, in the first half of the 21st century. Over the past decades, the predictions in this report about population, education, health, environment, and ecology have unfortunately come true one by one. In these 50 years, the world has undergone tremendous changes, with technological advancements, but sustainable development has faced serious crises: rapid loss of biodiversity, worsening climate, severe soil erosion, water scarcity…

50 years later, "Earth for All" still poses the century's fundamental question: "This book tells the story of our future - or more precisely, the shared future of all humanity in this century. Human civilization is at an extraordinary moment, standing at a crossroads." How will we safeguard Earth, the habitat for all living beings? How will we achieve the well-being of all humanity within the planetary boundaries in this century?

"Earth for All" uses the Earth4All model to envision global development scenarios for the coming decades, depicting the historical development patterns of population, education, economy, and greenhouse gas emissions. It proposes "five extraordinary transformations" to break the current economic inequality, achieve a transition in the development model within 30 years, more equitably distribute power and wealth, undergo an energy revolution and food revolution, and cease destructive agricultural practices that could lead to the sixth major extinction event. The core exploration lies in how to achieve economic and social prosperity within the Earth's limits and accomplish the global sustainable development goals.

In the process of considering the translation of the book title, Earth4All, we chose "Earth for All." Interestingly, the theme of World Earth Day 2023 is "Earth for All," which coincides with the title of our book. All sentient beings on Earth, including you, me, animals, plants, microorganisms, encompassing all life, mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes, grasslands, sands, sunlight, and air—everything is interconnected, interdependent, and interactive in the Earth's ecosystem. Every element in this system arises from the interplay of causes and conditions, and nature is the fundamental condition for human survival.

Since its establishment in 1985, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has been committed to biodiversity conservation and green development, adhering to the principles of respecting, conforming to, and protecting nature. We strive to promote harmonious co-existence between humans and nature, and practice the cause of ecological civilization. In the future, we are willing to work together with all sectors to continue efforts in the field of ecological environmental protection, advocate for the formation of green production and green lifestyle, actively participate in global environmental governance, and contribute to the construction of global ecological civilization. Let us look forward to a better world together.
