Besides the Mature Breeding Technology of Grey Parrot, Efforts Should be Made to Combat the Smuggling Trade

On June 2, 2023, the Research Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) replied to the letter from Forest Branch of Tangshan Municipal Police Bureau (https://www.toutiao.com/article/7234832126351327802) about the survey on whether the artificial breeding technology for the Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), the White Cockatoo (Cacatua alba), the Yellow-crowned Parrot (Amazona ochrocephala), and Double Yellow-headed Amazon (Amazona oratrix) is mature and whether the population has reached a certain scale, with a detailed report attached.

According to the research and analysis by CBCGDF, none of the wild populations of these four species are native to China. Through investigations on the domestic parrots of Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Hunan and other provinces where the breeding behaviour has been concentrated since 2016, CBCGDF found that the breeding technology of domestic Grey Parrot is relatively mature. However, since the origin wild Grey Parrot is extremely endangered, CBCGDF suggested to intensify the fight against the smuggling of the wild population on the basis of strictly regulating the artificial breeding management in China.

By studying the maturity of international and domestic breeding technologies and telephone interviews with relevant domestic parrot farms, CBCGDF drew the conclusion that the artificial breeding technologies of the other three species are not yet mature in China.

Since these four species are popular in the global pet market, their wild populations have been facing the threat of habitat destruction and international pet smuggling trade for a long time. According to the red list of IUCN, except for the Yellow-crowned Parrot, the wild populations of the other three species are all endangered. Therefore, CBCGDF suggested that the relevant departments of Tangshan Municipal Government should intensify their efforts to crack down on the smuggling trade of these four wild parrot species, and conserve their wild populations on the basis of mature artificial breeding.
