2023 Summer Internship Project of CBCGDF and UIC Globalisation and Development Programme Officially Launched

On June 28th, 2023, the summer internship project of the International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and Globalisation and Development (GAD) Programme, United International College of Beijing Normal University & Hong Kong Baptist University (UIC) was officially launched. The summer internship project is based on GAD-CBCGDF Sustainability Leadership Platform, which was jointly launched by the GAD Programme of UIC and CBCGDF with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in May, 2021. With the purpose of “cultivating outstanding young talents”, CBCGDF provides a variety of opportunities for participating international activities, and promotes young people’s active participation in international decision-making, enriching their experiences in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Brief Report of CBCGDF Suing Qinhuangdao Fangyuan Packaging Glass Co., Ltd. for polluting the atmospheric environment

Qinhuangdao Fangyuan Packaging Glass Co., Ltd. (Fangyuan Company) was mainly engaged in the production of various glass packaging bottles, with four glass kilns. In the production process, the Environmental Protection Bureau of Haigang District, Qinhuangdao City had repeatedly imposed administrative penalties for its excessive pollution discharge. In 2016, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) filed an environmental public interest lawsuit against Fangyuan Company, which accelerated the process of denitration, desulfurization and dust removal transformation. On June 15, 2016, Fangyuan Company passed the environmental protection acceptance by the Environmental Protection Bureau of Haigang District. On June 28, 2023, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), led a team to visit the Bangliang Gibbon National Nature Reserve in Guangxi for on-site biodiversity research. Within the Bangliang National Nature Reserve in Guangxi, Dr. Zhou and local staff of the protected area examined the natural habitats where the Cao Vit gibbons (Nomascus nasutus) resides, studied the population changes of the gibbon species, and learned the joint conservation efforts between China and Vietnam. Located in Jingxi City, Baise, Guangxi, the Bangliang Gibbon National Nature Reserve covers a total area of 6,530 hectares with a forest coverage rate of over 90%. The reserve is adjacent to the Chongqing Cao Vit Gibbon Protection Area in the northern part of Vietnam, and it is a typical karst landform area.   Human-wildlife conflict has long been a challenging issue faced in many regions, particularly in areas rich in biodiversity like Guangxi in southwestern China, known as one of the global biodiversity hotspots. On June 28, 2023, Dr. Jinfeng Zhou, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), conducted field biodiversity research in Longyi Village, Du'an Township, Debao County, Guangxi. His primary focus was to investigate the prevalent issue of human-monkey conflict. During the field research, Dr. Zhou interviewed local villagers to understand the impact of monkeys descending from the mountains on various crops and the existing challenges they face.   According to the farmers, the issue caused by monkeys goes beyond just damaging corn crops; their primary concern lies in the destruction of overall vegetation. On June 27th, 2023, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) visited Baidong No.1 Primary School in Youjiang District, Baise City, which is a Wenxiu School. Huang Wenxiu, an outstanding model of the times, had served as the first residential village secretary in the city of Baise, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In order to carry forward and inherit her heroic deeds, Baise City has named a number of schools with the title of “Wenxiu School”. CBCGDF Sues Zechang Titanium Industry Co., Ltd for Their Illegal Dumping Dangerous Waste

Since June 2011, Yunnan Zechang Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. has started dumping its dangerous waste residue containing Iron(II) sulfate into Qinggou River, Dabai Village & Zhangwan Village, Fumin County, Kunming City. Without going through any formalities, it has illegally occupied farmland and forest land as industrial waste residue storage yard, and no relevant protective measures have been taken for the storage yard. From 2013 to 2017, the Kunming Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau has imposed administrative penalties on Zechang Titanium Industry Co., Ltd but it refused to rectify and improve. In December 2017, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) filed a public interest lawsuit with the Kunming Intermediate People's Court. On June 21, 2023, the National Standardization Technical Committee of Quality Management in E-commerce (TC563) held a meeting to solicit opinions on the "Quality Management Standards for E-commerce Live Sales".
