Shenzhen Liantang Customs Intercepted 46 Endangered Stony Corals | CBCGDF OceanWetlands

In early April 2025, Shenzhen Liantang Customs intercepted 46 endangered stony corals that a passenger was carrying illegally during an inspection of inbound travelers.

Stony corals are precious marine organisms, listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and China's National Key Protected Wildlife Catalogue as second-class protected animals. Stony corals are a crucial part of marine ecosystems. The coral reefs they build are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea.” Countless fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine species rely on coral reefs for habitat, feeding, and breeding. Moreover, coral reefs play an important role in coastal protection by reducing the impact of waves and protecting coastal areas from erosion and storm surges.

However, stony corals are highly sensitive to environmental changes, especially to threats such as rising water temperatures, ocean acidification, and pollution. Global climate change has led to increased sea temperatures, which can cause coral bleaching and, in severe cases, coral death. Pollution and overfishing also pose significant threats to coral reefs. Therefore, protecting stony corals and the coral reef ecosystems they inhabit is vital for maintaining the health of the oceans and biodiversity.

Customs authorities remind that according to international conventions and Chinese laws, it is strictly prohibited to illegally buy, sell, carry, or mail endangered wild animals and plants and their products. Violators will be held legally accountable, and those with severe circumstances may face criminal charges.
