ZHOU Jinfeng Meets with Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean
From March 30 to 31, 2025, the SOS Ocean! International Conference was held in Paris, France. Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, President of World Academy of Sustainable Development, Fellow of World Academy of Art and Science(WAAS) and Founding Chairman of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) was invited to attend and met with Mr. Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean.
Co-hosted by the French government and the Oceano Azul Foundation, the SOS Ocean! International Conference served as a precursor to the third UN Ocean Conference. The event brought together heads of state, representatives of international organizations, and scholars from approximately 60 countries to discuss key issues such as reducing marine pollution, curbing rising sea levels, and protecting marine biodiversity. French President Emmanuel Macron attended the conference in person.
During the conference, Mr. Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, emphasized the urgency of ocean conservation. ZHOU Jinfeng exchanged views with Peter Thomson on marine protection and other topics, calling for more countries and organizations to join global efforts in safeguarding the ocean and working together to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14).
The successful convening of the SOS Ocean! International Conference laid a solid foundation for the upcoming third UN Ocean Conference. Through this event, representatives from various countries gained a clearer understanding of the urgency and importance of marine conservation, fostering consensus ahead of the UN Ocean Conference. It is believed that through collective efforts, the third UN Ocean Conference will yield fruitful outcomes, injecting new momentum into global ocean protection.
The third UN Ocean Conference will take place from June 9 to 13, 2025, in Nice, France, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. The conference aims to bring together all relevant stakeholders to support further urgent action in assessing and implementing SDG14. The event will gather governments, international organizations, research institutions, NGOs, and private sector representatives to discuss critical issues such as marine biodiversity conservation, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution control, and the blue economy.
