The 75th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and India: Dr. Rajendra Shende Shares His Article on China-India Relations Promoting Global Sustainable Development
On the day of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India, Dr. Rajendra Shende, consultant of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), the World's Climatology Leader, Chairman of the Indian TERRE Policy Centre, and Former Director of UNEP, shared with CBCGDF two articles on the constructive role of China-India relations in global sustainable development. Dr. Rajendra Shende pointed out that the cooperation between China and India is of irreplaceable importance in addressing global challenges.
Dr. Rajendra Shende emphasized in the article that the Himalayas are not only the natural boundary between China and India, but also the bridge connecting the 3500 years of cultural exchanges between the two countries. From Xuanzang's journey to the west to seek Dharma to the Indian doctor Dwarkanath Kotnis's assistance to China in the Anti Japanese War, the historical ties between the two peoples have always been strong and profound. These historical stories are not only symbols of friendship between the two countries, but also provide inspiration for contemporary cooperation.
Dr. Rajendra Shende pointed out that there is extensive room for cooperation between the two countries on global issues such as climate change and biodiversity conservation. He mentioned that China and India jointly account for 70% of global renewable energy and have both exceeded the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) target under the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule. The efforts of the two countries in reducing carbon intensity, expanding forest coverage, and promoting sustainable development have set an example for global ecological governance. Dr. Rajendra Shende believes that the "triple crisis" proposed by the United Nations Secretary General - air pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change - is a common challenge that China and India cannot avoid. The two countries should engage in deep cooperation in these areas. He specifically mentioned that China and India have enormous potential for cooperation in areas such as recycling of electronic waste, solar panels and electric vehicle batteries, and addressing the global water crisis.
The article quotes Tagore's famous quote: "Friends, I don’t know why, but when I come to China, it feels like returning to my hometown." Dr. Rajendra Shende is full of confidence in the future of China-India relations. He believes that they should focus on the common vision of the two countries in the rise of the global South. The two countries not only have the ability to solve their own sustainable development challenges, but also lead the direction of global ecological governance through cooperation. He called on both sides to regain historical ties and jointly address global crises at the important milestone of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Dr. Rajendra Shende emphasize that, when we work together, it is not only for the well-being of the two peoples, but also for the future of all mankind. In today's increasingly severe climate change and ecological crisis, the constructive role of China-India relations may determine the success or failure of global sustainable development.
