Establishing a Science-Policy Panel for Chemicals and Waste Management: A Crucial Step in Addressing the Pollution Crisis

Recently, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced that it will A science-policy panel to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution (SPP OEWG 3.2) from June 15 to 18, 2025, in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

In recent years, the global challenges of chemicals and waste management have intensified, with pollution posing increasing threats to ecosystems and human health. As the third pillar of the global scientific-policy interface for addressing the triple planetary crisis, the establishment of the Science-Policy Panel (SPP) will fill the governance gap in addressing the pollution crisis.

The SPP aims to provide policymakers with reliable and independent scientific information, helping countries develop science-based policies for chemicals and waste management. Through strategic cooperation with the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC), the SPP will further promote sound management of chemicals and waste, injecting new momentum into global environmental governance.

The functions of the SPP include assessing the entire lifecycle of chemicals, facilitating communication between scientists and policymakers, and supporting capacity-building in developing countries. These functions ensure effective integration between science and policy and provide scientific support for global cooperation in pollution governance, which means that it will represent a milestone in global environmental governance, marking a critical step forward in addressing the global challenge of pollution. We look forward to this platform providing scientific support for global chemicals and waste management and fostering consensus among countries in pollution governance to jointly tackle this planetary crisis.
