Alice Hughes, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, Discusses AI's Role in Biodiversity Monitoring

On March 22, 2025, Prof. Alice C. Hughes, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and Associate Professor at the School of Biological Sciences, The University of Hong Kong, delivered a keynote speech titled “Using New Tools to Provide Novel Insights for Biodiversity Monitoring” at the ICG-20 Wuhan Special Session of the 20th International Conference on Genomics.

The world’s ocean ecosystems are facing mounting threats—climate change, marine pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction due to human activities, to name a few. These pressures are particularly dangerous for marine mammals like cetaceans, whose survival hinges on healthy habitats and stable populations. Yet, in regions like the South China Sea, where biodiversity is exceptionally high, little research has been done to understand the needs and habitats of cetaceans.
