Academician of the Australian Academy of Sciences Arthur Georges: A Glimpse into the Future: Omics Provides Insight to Rapid Evolution Under Environmental Change
The 20th Annual Meeting of the International Conference on Genomics Wuhan (ICG-20 Wuhan) was held in Wuhan, China, from March 22 to 23, 2025, under the theme “Omics and AI in Biodiversity”.
Arthur Georges, Academician of the Australian Academy of Sciences and Distinguished Professor at the University of Canberra, was invited to attend and delivered an academic report titled “A Glimpse into the Future: Omics Provides Insight to Rapid Evolution Under Environmental Change”. This report opened up a frontier perspective of life science to global scholars. Professor Georges has a profound academic background and systematically expounded how omics technologies have become the key tools for decoding the rapid adaptation of organisms to environmental changes. This report triggered profound reflections among the attendees on the future development of evolutionary biology. Please watch the following video (26 minutes).

Arthur Georges is an ecologist and herpetologist with research interests in the evolution ecology and systematics of Australian reptiles. He is an internationally recognised expert on the evolution and ecology of reptile sex determination. His proposal that genetic and environmental sex determination represent ends of a continuum has revolutionized understanding of how the complex thermal environment of nests dictates sex in reptiles. His work redirected thinking on how reptiles survived past climate changes, and how human activities constrain their ability to respond to future challenges.
