EU Council and Parliament Agree on New Rules to Reduce Microplastic Pollution

Image
It is estimated that between 52 , 140 and 184 , 290 tonnes of pellets were lost into the environment in the EU in 2019. Pellet losses can occur at various stages along the value chain. Currently, no EU rules specifically cover plastic pellet losses . On 8 April 2025, the EU Council and the European Parliament provisionally agreed on a regulation on preventing the loss of plastic pellets – the industrial raw materials used to make plastic products – into the environment. The new rules will help improve the handling of plastic pellets at all stages of the supply chain, both on land and sea. Under the new rules, the prevention of plastic pellet losses would be the main objective for operators and EU and non-EU transporters. A clear framework will set out obligations in the event of accidental losses, focusing on clean-up operations. A clear set of measures will be included in a risk management plan prepared by each installation handling pellets. Such measures would cover, among other thin...

Overfishing is the Greatest Threat to Sharks, Rays, and Chimaeras

Image
There are over 1,250 described Chondrichthyan species around the world - this includes sharks, rays, and chimaeras. The results of IUCN SCC Shark Specialist Group ’ s  latest 2020 assessments show that an estimated 37% of all known species of sharks, rays, and chimaeras are threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Overfishing is the greatest threat to sharks, rays, and chimaeras, by far, affecting 100% of threatened species. Further, 31% of species are threatened by habitat loss, 10% are threatened by climate change, and 7% are threatened by marine pollution. CBCGDF Baihua Mountain Project Research Team Conducted a Biodiversity Baseline Investigation in Mentougou District, Beijing

Image
Recently, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) BaihuaMountain Project Research Team went to the surrounding areas of Qingshui Town, Mentougou District, Beijing to conduct a biodiversity baseline investigation, which aims to improve the regional biodiversity database and provide a scientific basis for related engineering construction, ecological protection and restoration.   Based on the terrain and water characteristics, the investigators preset 10 aquatic biological monitoring points in typical river habitats, and used fishing tools such as ground cage nets for sampling; for amphibians and reptiles, two sample lines with a total length of about 1 km were designed to record species activity traces through the sample line method. The relevant data will be included in the long-term monitoring system to study and analyze the interference mechanism of climate change on the ecosystem.   Original Chinese Ar ticle: https://mp.weixin.q...

CBCGDF volunteers patrol Baiyangdian: Ground cages are rampant and unmanaged

Image
In early April 2025, the director of the Hebei Sand Martin Conservation Area of CBCGDF went to patrol the Baiyangdian area and was surprised to find that the entire lake area was full of ground cages as far as the eye could see, with a very high density. Could it be that laying ground cages in Baiyangdian is legal and compliant? This puzzled the volunteers.   According to CBCGDF volunteers, they originally planned to patrol the wintering migratory birds in the lake and check the bird protection status. However, after arriving at the area near Xiong'an New Area in Baiyangdian, they found that frogs were croaking along the way. Although there were still many migratory birds such as white-bone tops staying in the lakes, they were still active in the lake area. It was rare to see illegal hunting tools such as bird nets, but there were a lot of ground traps in the lake water. "Almost every small stick sticking out of the water has a ground trap hanging underneath, and the lake is...

Hulan River's Riverbed Looted for Sand, Local Government Conducts Overnight Rectification | CBCGDF Volunteers Urge Action

Image
On the morning of April 2nd, volunteers from Suihua Conservation Area of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) were patrolling the Hulan River section in Wangkui County when they were shocked to discover several irregular, elongated pits on the wide and flat riverbed on the north side. These pits were filled with seeped-in river water. The pits, estimated to be tens of meters long and 20-30 meters wide each, stretched over nearly 100 meters of the riverbed when connected, causing significant destruction. The tracks of large excavators used by the sand miners were clearly visible on the riverbed. The volunteers reported this situation by phone to the local authorities and subsequently informed the Wangkui County Satellite Town Government about the illegal sand mining. On the evening of April 2nd, after verifying the situation on-site, local government departments and relevant water authorities carried out an overnight operation to refill the ex...

Shenzhen Liantang Customs Intercepted 46 Endangered Stony Corals | CBCGDF OceanWetlands

Image
In early April 2025, Shenzhen Liantang Customs intercepted 46 endangered stony corals that a passenger was carrying illegally during an inspection of inbound travelers. Stony corals are precious marine organisms, listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and China's National Key Protected Wildlife Catalogue as second-class protected animals. Stony corals are a crucial part of marine ecosystems. The coral reefs they build are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea.” Countless fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine species rely on coral reefs for habitat, feeding, and breeding. Moreover, coral reefs play an important role in coastal protection by reducing the impact of waves and protecting coastal areas from erosion and storm surges. However, stony corals are highly sensitive to environmental changes, especially to threats such as rising water temperatures, ...
