The 1st Investigation of Miyun Shouwei Mine Recorded 84 Plant Species | CBCGDF Mining Area Biodiversity Investigation
From October 14 to 15, 2024, the project team of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) organized a research team to conduct a biodiversity investigation in the Shouwei Mine, in Miyun Distriction, Beijing.
The Shouwei Mine, located in Miyun District, Beijing, was first built in the 1950s and mainly produces iron ore. Around 2010, after more than 50 years of ore mining, in response to the urban development plan and mine management in the new development period of Beijing, the mine stopped mining and started ecological repairing and restoration of the original mine area.
In order to find a scientific and efficient biodiversity repairing and restoration management plan for the mining area, the CBCGDF project team organized investigators to enter the Shouwei Mine for on-site exploration. Plant species and vegetation types in the mining area are one of the investigation tasks. The plant group determined five investigation lines based on the geographical location of the abandoned mining area and the surrounding forest area, the main mining area buildings and construction layout, and water resources conditions, and conducted an investigation on the plant diversity of this mining area.
At the mining site, investigators found that these huge mines with a history of more than 50 years of mining are usually surrounded by steep cliffs, uneven ground, and accumulated slag. These landforms will affect the habitat and distribution of organisms. The cliffs are the habitats of some climbing plants and birds, while the soil conditions in the slag accumulation area are poor and there are relatively few species of organisms.
After two days of investigation, the Green Plant Group of the CBCGDF recorded a total of 84 plants from 31 families in the Weike Mine and surrounding farmland areas, Hongmenchuan River, mountain forests and human activity intensive points, which will provide scientific support for the ecological restoration of the Shouwei Mine in the future.
