CBD COP16 Concludes with Three Major Agreements

On the evening of 1 November, the 16th United Nations Biodiversity Conference  (CBD COP16) concluded in Cali, Colombia, with three major agreements.

The three agreements are: the creation of a subsidiary body for indigenous peoples of Africa and local communities; the recognition of people of African descent as custodians of biodiversity under the Convention; and the establishment of a work plan for communities up to 2030.

COP16 gathered a total of 600 scientific events attended by 31,000 heads of state, officials, community representatives and experts.

The conference also highlighted that the Global Biodiversity Fund over the past two weeks have fallen short of the billions of dollars needed to tackle the rapid loss of global biodiversity. To date, the fund has received only about $400 million in donations.
